CHO OYU / GOKYOGrade: very strenuous Leader: Gord Konantz & Tashi Sherpa Our destination is Gokyo, 4750m, via the restricted valley of Bhote Kosi. Tashi has the ‘key’ that will unlock this area to us. The Bhote Kosi is the route used by Tibetans either to escape their Chinese oppressors or to bring trade goods to the Namche market. In short, we will pass only Tibetans on our ascent to Sumna and the Renjo La, the high pass that will take us into Gokyo and the comforts of Sherpa hospitality. The Bhote Kosi valley is dominated by the giant peaks of Kayajo Ri 6186m and Dragkya Chhulung 5657m. The summit of the Renjo La, Day 13, will offer outstanding views of Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse and Makalu, all in excess of 8000 meters. We will stay in the relative luxury of Gokyo Resort Lodge before returning down the Machhermo gorge to Namche Bazar for a well earned cold beer! 14 days trekking in the Khumbu and Sagarmatha National Park. The Khumbu is the home of the Sherpas, Mt. Everest and four of ten of the highest mountains in the world. Our base is Namche Bazar 3440m, the commercial centre of the Khumbu where Sherpas gather each Saturday morning to trade goods that have been carried from southern Nepal or over the Nangpala pass from Tibet. At Namche we stay at Camp de Base Lodge, the ancestral home of Tashi Sherpa.
