The Norbulingka

The Dalai Lama's Residence in the Norbulingka.

The word Norbulingka means 'Jewel Park'. It is a large park full of trees, ponds, gardens, palaces, and pavilions. Construction was first started there by the Seventh Dalai Lama (~1750). He selected the location on account of a medicinal spring, where he would bathe due to his frail disposition. It has been used as a summer residence, retreat, and recreation area by successive Dalai Lamas since the time of the Eighth Dalai Lama. Most of the buildings were constructed during this century by the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Dalai Lamas. During the Shoton Festival, the eastern part is packed with people enjoying the opera (Lhamo) performances.
